How Many Storage Units Can Be built Per Acre?

Today’s question comes to us from Brian and what Brian wants to know is how many storage units can fit on one acre of land. So Brian, I’m assuming that you want to start a storage business, you probably have like about an acre of land or you just have a lot of space and you’re wondering how many units you can build on that land to see how much money you can actually make and whether the project will be worth it? So the short answer is there is no short answer. As you probably know, storage units come in all shapes and sizes. You could have a 5 feet by 5 feet, and you could have a 15 feet by 25 feet, so obviously it’s not going to fit the same amount of units for both of those. Now most storage facilities rent out a mixture of different sizes, so it’s really difficult to tell. The second thing to think about is how many stories you want your facility to be. If you’re talking about a multi-level facility with like two or three levels, obviously you can fit a lot more storage units on the same amount of space. But if it’s a single level facility, it’s going to be a lot less. So that’s another thing that you’re going to need to consider. The last thing that a lot of people don’t think of is actually not all of your space can be used for storage units. If you’re building a facility, you do need to allocate quite a bit of space, about 40%, for other things such as an entrance, pathways, office spaces, bathrooms. There are a lot of things to consider and so not every inch of your space is going to actually be a storage unit that you can rent out and make money off of. So in conclusion, Brian, it’s kind of impossible to give one single definite answer for this And the best way to go about it, if you’re thinking about starting your own storage facilities, there are storage construction companies that can make a plan for you, provide you with a blueprint, you tell them what you need, and based on those needs, they will give you an exact plan so you can know exactly how many units you can fit on your land.
